Prayers December 25, 2017 - Christmas

Nativity of the Lord

Today (tonight), our hearts are full of joy as we celebrate that God’s word took on human flesh and came to be one with us, to teach and enlighten us. This is truly something beyond words! How has this enfleshed word of God been good news for your life? What does it mean for you? How have you experienced his light?

Penitential Act

  • Lord Jesus, you are the word of God made flesh: Lord, have mercy.
  • Christ Jesus, you are the true light that enlightens the world: Christ, have mercy.
  • Lord Jesus, you are the cause of our joy: Lord, have mercy.

Scripture Readings

  • Isa 52:7-10 God comforts, restores and redeems us.
  • Psalm 98 The whole earth sings God’s saving power.
  • Heb 1:1-6 God has spoken to us through the Son, who is above all.
  • John 1:1-18 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.

Prayer of the Faithful

Presider My friends, as we ponder the amazing mystery of God’s word sent to us, we speak to God our own words of continuing need for ourselves and the whole world.
Minister On this day of amazing good news, we pray that the church may be a faithful witness to the light of Christ … we pray,

  • For the light of peace for all who dwell in the darkness of war or violence across the world, in our nation or in our families … we pray,
  • For the light of hope for all who dwell in the darkness of poverty … we pray,
  • For the light of comfort for our absent family members, for those in the military or in prison, for refugees and all who are alone … we pray,
  • For the light of love for those who provide the amenities we enjoy during these holidays; for those who must work today or provide for our safety … we pray,
  • For the light of healing for all who are sick, awaiting death or grieving the loss of a loved one; for those who have died … (names). For hearts that are filled with joy and gratitude … we pray,

Presider Gracious God, you speak a living word that touches and redeems everything and everyone. Hear the prayers we speak to you and fill our hearts with joy and gratitude. We pray in the name of your Son, Jesus, the true light, forever and ever. Amen.
